Junior Development Program - Queensland

QPA Youth Development Office: Jodie Hall

QPA Assistant Youth Development Officer: Greg Wheeler

Junior Development is a major priority area for the Queensland Polocrosse Association.

Each Zone has a Junior Development Coordinator who works with the state

coordinator and many Clubs now have a Junior Development Officer also.

Queensland holds an annual Junior Coaching and Development weekend

with qualified coaches in horsemanship, game tactics and strategies.

This alternates with the Junior Selection Trials weekend held prior to a Nationals year

and usually includes coaching and development for all interested juniors.

Junior Development Program - Zone and Club

Each Zone and Club should have a Junior Development Officer.

The Zone and Club Officers will liaise with the Queensland Junior Development Officer

to develop junior polocrosse at a Zone and Club level, to further

the growth of junior polocrosse and to assist in the development of junior players skills.

Youth Development Report

"Behind the Goal Posts"

I hope you are all enjoying the off season which is almost at a close

for all the players participating at the Nationals.

Within a matter of weeks it will be back

to the task of getting horses fit to peak in April.

The Inaugural youth camp was held from the 28th -30th June

2011 at Cunningham.  It was attended by 91 participants.

here were 171 sessions taught over the three days by 21 coaches.

The topics covered were Bowen Therapy, Athlete skills,

Polocrosse Rules, Ball Games, Boxing, Halter Making, Horsemanship,

Homework Drills, Horse Nutrition & Fitness, Dental Care,

Hoof Care, Roles of No.1, Roles of the No. 2, Roles of the No.3,

Pony Club Novelties(with a polocrosse twist) & Flat work.

The catering was fantastic with Rob & Cheryl Raiteri

coming all the way down from Proserpine to cook for us.

A lot of outside help was also given in the kitchen by the parents,

grandparents and supporters.  Lisa Muller tackled the task

of putting all these names into a roster system that worked very well.  Thanks Lisa.

As always it is impossible to hosts these camps without

the volunteering of coaches and workers.

I am extremely grateful to all these people as without them this

would not have been the tremendous success that it was.

Many positive comments have been heard during

and after the camp and they all want to know when the next one is.

I would like to thank the following people for their support and help for the youth Camp:
QPA for their support in hosting this clinic,

The Youth Development Committee Members (Lisa Muller, Greg Wheeler & Andrew Phillips).

Paul Oleary from the Cunningham Club for all his help and guidance in setting up for the camp,

Rob and Cheryl Raiterie and all especially the coaches.

The next event on the calendar for the Youth Development Committee was the horsemanship schools.

We held two separate Gerald Obrien horsemanship schools in September.

The first school was held on the 26th & 27th September at Capella indoor arena and was attended by 11 people.

The second school was held at Clifton in the Allora indoor arena and was attended by 12 people.

The improvement in each of these people that attended the schools was remarkable.

Many letters of appreciation have been received by the attendants.

I would like to thank the Clifton and Emerald clubs for hosting these events.

A special thank you to Gordon Moloney for allowing us to utilize his cooking facilities during the week at Capella.

Also a big thanks to Cohen Bourke for the loan of his vehicle.

The Intermediate and Junior Trials held at Chinchilla were very well attended.

There were 90 intermediate players and 91 junior players in attendance to fight it out for only 32 intermediate representative positions

(including muswellbrook) and  22 junior representative positions (including subbies).

Congratulations to those of you who were selected I am sure you will do our state proud.

To those players that did not gain selection I am sure you all learnt something from attending the trials.

I can remember a time when Trent Collins could not make selection into a Queensland team at Junior and Intermediate trials,

however Trent was able to turn his disappointment into determination and look what it has done for him.

I am sure we would all like to be able to play the standard of polocrosse that Trent plays today.

Thanks to all those that attended especially the selectors who give up their time for what can sometimes be a very thankless task.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all fellow polocrosse players a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I look forward to catching up with everyone during the 2012 season.

Kind Regards,

Jodie Hall

Qld Youth Development Officer.
