Latest News ... 16th October 2009 ... Hendra virus incidents 2009 ... Properties given the all clear!!
The five remaining properties involved in the recent Hendra virus incidents at Cawarral and Bowen in central Queensland have been given the
all clear with test results finalised today. These properties can now return to normal activities with no more quarantine measures in place,
or any restrictions on horse movements to and
from their properties.
Biosecurity Queensland takes Hendra virus extremely seriously and will continue to work with the Australian Animal Health Laboratories, the peak
veterinary bodies, key stakeholders to the Queensland horse industry and other research institutions to learn more about the virus so it can be
better prevented and managed in the future.

Latest News ... 2nd September 2009.
The news that Rockhampton veterinarian, Dr Alister Rodgers, died today (2 Sept) is absolutely tragic.
Alister tested positive to Hendra Virus after treating a positive horse before Hendra Virus was even suspected!
This emphasises just how dangerous Hendra Virus is.
Everybody who has horses that might come into contact with areas frequented by flying foxes (fruit bats) need to take appropriate precautions to prevent infection of humans and other horses.
All flying fox populations are potentially infected with Hendra Virus and horses are an amplifying host.
Though Hendra Virus infection outside flying foxes is unusual, it appears to be becoming more frequent in recent years.
50% of people who become infected with Hendra Virus are at grave risk of dying from the infection.
70 - 80% of horses that become infected will die and the remainder are destroyed to prevent Occupational Health and Safety issues in humans.
It is essential that horse owners inform themselves on how to reduce the risks of Hendra Virus infection of both horses and humans.
The only known cases of human infection have been the result of contact with Hendra Virus positive horses.
